5.29.17
I'd resumed workouts fairly quickly after TRI FW, booking swim, bike, and run time after a couple of days off.
In an effort to force myself to push a little, I registered for this race on the Saturday before. I asked Griffin if he wanted to run, too, which ultimately turned into the entire family going for the event. It would be Gage's 1st 5k.
We arrived in time to get Lindsi, Gage, and Griffin registered, and I was able to warm up just a bit before the race. For whatever reason, I had in my head that I would try to push a little on this one, as I felt like I hadn't run hard in awhile, and, my legs were feeling pretty good. I wanted to be in the 7's. If I could do that, it would be my 1st race in the 7's since October 2015.
When the race began, I got out to a fast start...too fast...and booked a 7:29 mile 1. I knew I wouldn't be able to sustain that pace, but, felt like if I could "just hold on", I could still achieve my pace goal. This was a simple out and back course, so, it was easy to track distance covered, other runners, etc.
I slowed slightly for mile 2, and booked a 8:03. I saw Sheila and James about that time, as they'd come out to support the runners. Seeing them kept me pushing a bit. I slowed slightly more for mile 3, booking a 8:09, but, got motivation by seeing Sheila, James, and Lexy, and, racing Johnny to the finish. When it was all said and done, I'd booked a 24:35, or, 7:54 per mile. Mission accomplished.
Griffin came in next, with a solid 31:32, and, as always, finished strong.
We waited a few minutes, and Griffin began to walk back to find Gage. We finally saw Gage and Lindsi headed towards the finish line. Lindsi finished a little ahead of Gage, and Griffin and I took the opportunity to run him in.
That little dude had finished his 1st 5k ever, booking a 47:40.
Good way to start the day with a family run!
