Take 3.
After HHH yesterday, I was curious to see how I'd feel today.
Awake a 3 with no alarm...out the door by 5. PPU by just after 6, prepped transition...ready to hit the pool at 7 am race start time.
Swim: I estimated 4:57 for the 250 yards when I registered. That would be much faster than my 5:38 of a year ago. I hit the water and felt good. I passed a few people and got passed by a couple. 4:57 on the dot. The swimming is paying off.
T1: Uneventful. 1:23
Bike: On the bike and ready to crank. I set a goal of 36 minutes, or, 20 mph for 12 miles. Ambitious. Like always, I felt good and fast on the way out. I started with my helmet shield in the up position. When I put it down at about 3 miles, I almost crashed as it was terribly fogged up. I put it back in the up position and continued. Note to self: start with shield in down position. When we were approaching the turn, 2 cyclists came almost to a compete stop, causing me to unclip. I suspect I lost 30 seconds trying to get clipped back in and started again. However, my 6 mile split was 18 minutes. I was on track. As per usual, things slowed a bit coming back, but, I was able to manage a 19.2 mph pace for the next few miles. I would miss my 36 minute target. Apparently, I extended my ride .2 miles, and booked a 38:59. I was 18.9 mph per Strava, but, 18 mph per results. And, slightly slower than last year, when I booked a 38:08.
T2: fairly uneventful, although I had to sit briefly to fix a shoe lace. 1:50
Run: I'm not nearly in the running shape that I was a year ago. However, the recent cleanse and increase in training was bound to help. I wanted to run a steady pace for the 1st 1.5 miles, and, pick it up at the end. I felt surprising good, and booked a 9:43 1st mile. I sped up to 9:34 for mile 2, and 9:25 for mile 3. DAR added a 40 yard dash component this year, which was fun.
Overall, I clocked a 1:16:30. 31 seconds slower than last year. However, not a bad day, and, a good weekend of workouts.
20 of 31 in my AG. Some fast folks out there today! 95 of 198 males.
