Austin 70.3 training



this post will be a little different, as I hope to document my training for Austin daily.  I will begin (resume?) my training tomorrow, Monday, August 15.  My training block calls for a 16 week plan, but, mine will be shortened to 11.  I have yet to register for the race, but, plan to do so this week.  once I'm in, I'm in.

So, allow me to set the stage:  I have really struggled in 2016 with consistent training and smart eating.  I had a decent year with both in 2015, as I cleansed mid-year and was able to train for my 1st 26.2.  This year, due to several factors, has been a challenge.  As a result, my weight has hovered between 200 - 205, and, my races have been slowish.

Running:  I've only completed 2 runs over 4 miles twice since April, with 1 10k and 1 7 miler.  I last completed a 13.1 in April, and, it was terribly slow.  At this point last year, I was running at least 4x per week, and, had completed 10 13.1's.  Additionally, my 5k times are about 3 minutes slower per race this year compared to last.  I have some work to do to get back in running shape.  My next 11 weeks will call for 3 runs per week, with long runs on Sundays.  Next Sunday, August 21, calls for a 10 miler.

Biking:  I upgraded my bike this year, and, have been fairly pleased with the result.  I have gotten more comfortable in the aero position, and, my times in bike rallies have been faster than a year ago.  My plan will call for 3 rides per week, with long rides on Saturdays.  I'm scheduled to ride 40 miles on 8.20.   I have registered for the 100k at HHH on August 27, and will look to find some more bike rallies to help with my long Saturday rides.

Swimming:  my weak leg, for sure.  I hoped to use this summer to get more comfortable in open water, but, alas, I haven't.  I am a bit more confident in the water than I have previously been, as my workouts, although sparse, have been longer, and, I've completed 2 OWS swimming races this year (500 meters each).  I'm hoping to continue my pool workouts starting this week, and, race an OWS event in September.  I am still only comfortable in OWS events that are wetsuit legal, so, that may dictate my schedule.  Austin is typically wetsuit legal, so, if I can build my swimming stamina, I should be okay.

Nutrition:  a new 30 day cleanse will start tomorrow.  I am going into to it heavy, as we are just wrapping up vacation.  I'd like to get my weight back down to the mid to low 190's by the race.

Overall outlook:  naively optimistic.  I feel as though I can get through the bike and run, and, with a little work, feel decent about my pace in each.  The swim will take more work.  I have only completed 3 OWS events, each 500 meters. That distance will almost quadruple for Austin.

Over the next 11 weeks, I hope to document my daily weight, scheduled workout, actual workout, nutrition, etc.  Here we go:

Monday, 8.15.16:  weight:  207.4.  vacation took its toll.  This is the heaviest I've been in quite some time.  I'll start the cleanse tomorrow, but, ate incredibly light today... I really wasn't hungry after all of the heavy food over the past several days.  While the training plan calls for Monday rest days,  I swam a 1500 - all with the pull buoy, and, 500 with paddles

Tuesday, 8.16.16:  3:49 a.m.:  Insomnia, again.  2nd night in a row.  I woke up at a little after 2.  ugh. weight:  203.6.  I started the cleanse supplements this morning.   I planned to ride today, but, I had a meeting until 6, and there was a threat of rain.  As a result, I cranked out a slow 3 mile run instead.  Like yesterday, I didn't eat much until dinner...not by choice, just a crazy schedule.

Wednesday, 8.17.16:  while the insomnia improved last night, I have been fighting a headache for a couple of days.  I suspect it is from sugar withdrawals.  Weight: 202.4.  I'm not sure when my workout will happen today, as I am booked solid until 5.  The schedule calls for swim / run.  In the end, no workout today, as I was not feeling great.  I'm hoping to get back on track tomorrow with a swim and the last Trinity 5000 of the summer.

Thursday, 8.18.16:   I woke up feeling better this morning, as my 3 day headache was gone.  weight:  204 (I ate a little more/ better yesterday).  Today:  Swim and Run...  11:41 a.m.:  I just registered for Austin.  Here we go...gulp.  Workouts:  1500 meter swim and the last 5k of the 2016 Trinity 5000 series.  I won the night and the series in the Clydesdale division.  I'll take it.

Friday, 8.19.16:  I woke up feeling a bit achy after yesterday. I suspect that will improve as the day progresses.  weight:  200.8.  Today's schedule calls for a swim and run.  I believe I can get the swim done mid-afternoon.  Not sure on the run...  well, 1100 meter swim is all that the day would allow for...

Saturday, 8.20.16:  weight:  201.8.  1650 meter swim (just over a mile), and, a slow 7 mile run / walk in the rain.  Today was supposed to be a bike day, but, the weather is not cooperating.  Hopefully tomorrow...

Sunday, 8.21.16:  weight: 202.2.  The rain subsided and I was hoping for a long ride this morning. However, a sick kiddo and life got in the way.  I was able to get 23 done on the bike this afternoon and a late 2 mile run in.

Monday, 8.22.16:  weight: 202.8.  my weight loss has plateaued, but, I suspect it will resume soon.  I struggled with insomnia last night, likely due to a late dinner and the sugar I took in from Gatorade yesterday while riding.  Additionally, I am quite sore and achy today.  While today calls for a rest day, I hope to hit the pool this afternoon.  1250 done.

Tuesday, 8.23.16:  broken sleep last night as Griffin is sick. He tossed and turned and moaned all night.  Ugh. Weight: 202.  On tap for for today: swim and run.  Griff was home with strep all day. 1st day he has missed of school in 2 years.  Poor little guy. No workout for me.  Hoping to get back on track tomorrow.

Wednesday, 8.24.16: 66 days to go.  Much better sleep last night, as Griff was feeling a bit better.  weight:  202.2.  After staying home with Griff this morning, I am back at work and planning to get back into workouts today. 9 pm:  I'd planned to swim and run today, but, Michael talked me into cycling instead.  We'd planned on heading out towards Beach street on the trails, but, the low water crossing was underwater.  As a result, I only got in 14 miles on the  bike.  I then joined the Wednesday night social run group at the food truck park for a slow 4 miler.  I'll run with that group again.  Tomorrow I'm planning on an afternoon swim followed by a run with the trailhead social run group.

Thursday, 8.25.16:  weight:  199.  Finally under 2 bills.  I'd like to keep it that way and drop another 6 or so before the race.  Good sleep last night.  On tap for today:  swim and run...1600 meters swim and 4 mile run / walk done

Friday, 8.26.16: weight:  199. 1500 yard swim today at HCY.  I hoped to get a bike ride in as well, but, rain kept me from it.  Tomorrow: HHH

Saturday, 8.27.16:  HHH day!  Weight pre-ride: 200.2 Weight post-ride: 196.8. 100k cycling done.  Tomorrow: Old College Tri.  

Sunday, 8.28.16: weight: 200.4.  Old College Tri done. 4:57 250 yard swim, 18.9 on the 12 mile bike, and 9:30ish on the 5k run.  I'll take it.  

Monday, 8.29.16:  I slept hard last night and woke up feeling that "good kind" of soreness. Good weekend of training.  Weight: 201.4. I ate a little more yesterday post race.  Not to worry. Today calls for a rest day, but, I'll swim this afternoon.  1500 meter swim and 5k run in my new Hoka Cliftons done. New kicks felt great.

Tuesday, 8.30.16:  weight: 201. An invitation to dinner with the fam kept me off the bike.  Not a terrible thing, as yesterday was supposed to be a rest day. Back at it tomorrow!

Wednesday 8.31.16:  weight:  201.6  I ate a little heavier yesterday which led to insomnia and a spike in weight.  get it together D. Smith!! 1500 meter swim and 4 mile run done. 

Thursday, 9.1.16: weight: 199.4. Back under 2 bills.  Not sure when workouts are going to happen today, as I'm booked solid. Hopefully I can squeeze something in.  4 mile run done. 

Friday, 9.2.16: 58 days till the race.  Weight: 198. No workout today, but, good weekend ahead with 10k on Saturday and 15k on Monday.  I'll bike Sunday and mix in a swim or two as well this weekend.  My wrist has been a bit sore while swimming. I think it is a pain that is carrying  over from HHH. Hopefully it will feel better this weekend after a few days out of the pool.

Saturday, 9.3.16:  weight:  200.4  I ate too heavy last night.  I had a solid 10k this morning, and, was able to squeeze in an unexpected 1300 meters in the pool.  I've had an upset stomach this morning, but, am starting to feel better.  tomorrow is bike day, and, Monday is the FWRC 15k.

Sunday, 9.4.16:  weight:  199.2.  32.6 done on the bike.  tomorrow: FWRC 15k

Monday, 9.5.16:  weight:  200.4.  I had a strong 15k today.  I felt great.  the diet and training are paying off.  That said, I ate crap this afternoon / evening.

Tuesday, 9.6.16:  weight:  202.4.  Cheat day was costly.  back to clean eating and some time in the saddle this afternoon...As much as I didn't want to, I got in 14 on the bike today...

Wednesday, 9.7.16:  weight: 198.6.  on tap for today, swim and wednesday night social run 4 miler.  Was unable to get swim done due to schedule, but, had a decent 4 miler despite dead legs and back pain...I may need a rest day before the weekend events...

Thursday, 9.8.16:  weight:  196.4.  I struggled with insomnia last night, waking at 4 a.m.  In addition, my back pain has not improved.  I'm hopeful that it will loosen up today.  I have yet to swim this week, and, at the very least, would like to do that today...and, I have not ruled out the thursday night 4 miler...well, the back loosened up nicely.  1500 meter swim and a solid 4 miler - the fastest I've run the Thursday social run.

Friday, 9.9.16:  weight:  196.  Not sure what workout(s) will be for today, but, it may be time for a rest day after 6 days straight.  I have a bike rally tomorrow and a Tri on Sunday.  We shall see...   ...11 a.m. - I've wrenched my back to the point that I'm home in bed.  With a weekend full of races, I'm hoping it improves!  Worst back pain I've ever had.  I actually considered calling the ambulance today.  While it has improved a little, I'll be sitting out tomorrow's bike rally, hoping for enough of an improvement that I can race on Sunday...

Saturday, 9.10.16:  still bed ridden.  No weight today, as getting to the scale would be too painful.  Skipped bike rally this morning.  Not looking good for tomorrow's race.

Sunday, 9.11.16:  4 a.m.:  Well, I should be headed to Lake Ray Roberts for the Disco Tri, but, alas, I'm not.  I still have significant back pain.  I was able to get up and hobble to the bathroom for a shower yesterday, but, woke up in pain this morning.  I'm hoping for a little more improvement today and will try to see the chiropractor tomorrow.  With any luck, I will be able to resume light training mid-week.

Monday, 9.12.16:  weight: 200.6.  After a 3 days of laying in bed, it could be worse.  I'll try to get to the chiropractor today.  I'm ready to stand upright again...
Well, I clearly don't know how insurance works.  After getting word of the required co-pays / fees for chiropractor, I opted for a massage with Dayo.  Hoping for some relief...

Tuesday, 9.13.16:  weight:  200.6.  I'm hoping for a swim today, but, the back would have to loosen up quite a bit.  We'll see.  I'm still nowhere close to bike / run condition.  Hoping to be better by late week...  P.M. update:  back still bad.  No workout today.  tomorrow??

Wednesday, 9.14.16:  weight:  199.6.  2 nights of insomnia in a row...Back is still pretty tender.  Maybe a swim this afternoon?  No luck.  Back still hurting and schedule was full today.

Thursday, 9.15.16:  weight: 199.6.  Back is still stiff after sitting or sleeping.  But...maybe a swim today???  A slow, steady, 2000M swim done.  Longest swim in quite some time, and, done in one set, rather than the multiple 500M sets that are the norm.   Back is beginning to feel slightly better.   Would it be idiotic for me to consider the Funky Town 20k on Saturday night???

Friday, 9.16.16:  weight: 198.  I'm feeling sore after my swim yesterday, but, it's a good sore.  My back is somewhat better than yesterday, but, still is not ready for a run.  I'll attempt to stretch a few times today, with hopes of additional improvement.  I'll need to make a decision about the funky town 20k today...no workout today and funky town is looking to be a bad idea.

Saturday, 9.17.16:  weight:  197.4.  Back still hurts.  No workout today and passed on Funky Town 20k.  this is getting old.

Sunday, 9.18.16:  battery in scale died, so, no weight today.  tough getting out of bed today, but, back has loosened up since...

Monday, 9.19.16:  no weight today.  back is feeling better...swim in store for today...2000M swim done.

Tuesday, 9.20.16:  scale is officially dead.  new purchase coming soon.  2000M swim done...social run tomorrow??

Wednesday, 9.21.16:  1500M swim done.  Wanted to join Wednesday social run tonight, but, schedule wouldn't allow it.  Tomorrow is wide open schedule-wise.  I'll test the back on bike or run...or both.

Thursday, 9.22.16:   2000M swim and 4 mile run done.  Back felt ok, legs felt weak.  Will take a few runs to get back in rhythm.  But, 1st run in 2 weeks done. 

Friday, 9.23:16:  I was sore from last night's run.  My quads felt as if I'd run a13.1. It will take a little time for my body to reacclimate to running.  That said, although I had no interest in doing so, I cranked out a 1100M swim and 2 mile run today.  Time to ramp back up.

Saturday, 9.24.16:  back is a little stiff today.  I hoped for a long bike ride, but, took today as a rest day instead.  I hope to get in a longish run in the morning.  This back pain is getting old.

Sunday, 9.25.16:  it was pouring rain this morning.  I got out at about noon, once the rain had slowed, and cranked out a slow, sloppy, wet 10 miler.  It felt good to go for a long run in the rain.  Back still hurts...

Monday, 9.26.16:  tough night of sleep last night.  The back did not respond well to the long run yesterday.  I was planning on biking today, but, I may opt for a swim instead, to allow the back to recover a bit.  20 days since I've been on the bike...that's not good...
...evening update:  massage today with Dayo helped relieve some tightness in my legs and back, but, still a lot of back pain.  Per Dayo's advice, no workout today.  Hoping for a swim tomorrow.  33 days until Austin...

Tuesday, 9.27.16:  back felt a little better today.  2100M swim done.  tomorrow: swim/run.

Wednesday, 9.28.16:  back felt much better today.  1500M swim done followed by 3.7 mile run with Social Run group.  Hoping for a similar day tomorrow.  Hopefully I'm getting back to normal and can resume longer training runs and rides.  I desperately need to get back on the bike...

Thursday, 9.29.16:  back continues to improve.  I planned on a swim and run today, but, I was needed at home, so only a swim.  2000M done.  Tomorrow, I get back on the bike.

Friday, 9.30.16:  tired arms led to a short swim:  1200M.  4.1 mile run afterwards felt good!  Back is feeling much better.  Coming up:  longish bike tomorrow and longish run on Sunday...

Saturday, 10.1.16:  October is here...It's race month...gulp.  32 miles on the bike today.  1st time in the saddle in 25 days.  It took me a little time to get used to being on the bike again, but, overall, not too bad.  My legs are tired and a little sore.  I need to get in 3 rides a week over the next 4 weeks.  Good to be back in the saddle.

Sunday, 10.2.16:  I was a little sore today after yesterday's ride, but, out the door a little before 9 for a long run.  I figured I'd go somewhere between 10 and 14, depending on how I felt.  12.4 miles done and felt good.  A good confidence boost...

Monday, 10.3.16:  rest day.  I felt a little soreness after the weekend, but, ready to get back at it tomorrow.

Tuesday, 10.4.16:  I was feeling a little tired and achy today...maybe allergies??  But, a slow 1650M swim and slow 3 mile run done.

Wednesday, 10.5.16:  I was hoping for an OWS with FWTri Club this afternoon, but, alas, the schedule will not allow it.  Swim Waves and Bib Numbers posted today:





Planning on a pool swim and run prior to picking up the boys from school.  2000M swim done.  That'll be it for today.

Thursday, 10.6.16:  What I thought was allergies has turned into a full blown head cold.  But, I fought through it for a slow 6 mile run with the Luke's group.

Friday, 10.7.16:  head cold is kicking my ass.  1500M swim done.  Need a long bike and a long run this weekend.  A few bike rally options tomorrow morning, but, It may be better to sleep in and ride later.

Saturday, 10.8.16:  tough night of sleep last night due to cold.  I slept in and went to Griffin's soccer game at 10.  I got out at a little after noon for 23 miles on the bike.  Not nearly as long of a ride as I wanted / needed, but, I wasn't feeling great.  I figured I'd take it easy today and plan for a long run tomorrow morning.

Sunday, 10.9.16:  Griffin was up all night with stomach issues.  As a result, I was up with him.  I planned on a long run this morning at 7, but, he asked that I stay with him.  He is scheduled to race in his first triathlon at noon.  I'll try to get a long run in this afternoon. ...Afternoon update:  Griffin crushed his 1st tri, but, it appears that my long run will have to wait until tomorrow...

Monday, 10.10.16:  weight 194 (post run).  12.4 mile run done for breakfast.

Tuesday, 10.11.16: weight:  195.8.  13.3 mile bike done.

Wednesday, 10.12.16:   weight:  195.8.  1500M swim and 4.1 mile run done. Off to OKC until Friday...

Thursday, 10.13.16:  up early before the conference. 1600 yard swim and 2 mile treadmill run complete at the DTOKCY.

Friday, 10.14.16:  2000Y swim at DTOKCY.

Saturday, 10.15.16:  weight: 192.2  32 miles on the bike done.

Sunday, 10.16.16:  weight:  194.4.  A hot, humid, windy 10 mile run done.  Looking forward to rest day tomorrow!

Monday, 10.17.16.  rest day.  However, over 12k steps today at DTY golf tourney.  back at it tomorrow...

Tuesday, 10.18.16.  late day 1000M swim and 2 mile run done.  pushed the pace on the run and averaged 8:10/mile.

Wednesday, 10.19.16:  weight:  194.  1400M swim and 4 mile run done.

Thursday, 10.20.16:  weight: 192.  10 days until Austin...  Friends of the River 6k done.  30:03.  4th in AG

Friday, 10.21.16:  weight:  194.8.  food at Friends of the River party last night led to spike in weight and insomnia.  Hoping for swim and run today.  1700M swim done.

Saturday, 10.22.16:  22.6 done on the bike.  Tomorrow:  Monster Keller

Sunday, 10.23.16:  Monster Keller done.  so-so swim, solid bike, easy run.  This time next week, I should be a 70.3 finisher.

Monday, 10.24.16:  Race Week!  weight:  198.6.  A few days of bad nutrition made the weight spike a bit.  I'll be a little more mindful this week,  Today:  rest day...

Tuesday, 10.25.16:  insomnia again last night.  weight:  196.  on tap for today:  swim and run.  1200M swim and 2 mile run done.

Wednesday, 10.26.16:  age: 46.  weight:  195.4.  I opted for bday pizza with the fam today over a workout.

Thursday, 10.27.16:  weight:  196.4.  No workout today.  Letting the body rest before Sunday.

Friday, 10.28.16.  Off to Austin today!  No workout planned.

Saturday, 10.29.16:  500 yard swim, 3.5ish mile bike, half mile run.  Feeling great!  Even in the water.  Feeling confident and ready for tomorrow!
