Week 7.
Standings: Jan 3 wins, Derek 3 wins. Each race means something as Jan and I are battling for 1st in Clydesdale.
It was my hope to manage this race better, with low 8's to start, and maintain / speed up as the race progressed.
That said, I rode 30 hard minutes on the trainer before going to the race. I was curious to see how my legs would feel.
Mile 1 - 8:04. I felt good and in control. As per usual, we were running into a bit of a headwind, and it was hot. Jan and Katherine were pacing just behind me, and, I knew if I let up, I would be passed. We made the turn, and my SS buddies were close. Jan passed shortly after, and looked really strong. I knew he was speeding up, and would be tough to catch. I made the decision to save my legs and let him go. I was afraid I might risk injury if I pushed too hard. He was simply a stronger runner this time. Mile 2 - 8:18. As with the last few weeks, I walked the water stop at mile 2 to take in fluids and let my heart rate decrease a bit. Katherine and Carl passed me at that point, but, I was still holding 2nd in Clydesdale. I walked longer than normal, but, kept everyone in my sights, and resumed running. I passed Katherine and Carl again, and booked a 8:44 mile 3. 6:54 for the .1. 25:52 total. More than a minute behind Jan and nearly a minute slower than last week. That said, not a bad time compared to my 2016 and 2017 times thus far.
