2017 Trinity 5000 Summer Series Week 8

7.20.17

Week 8.  Hot AF.

Standings: Jan 4, D Smith 3.

We returned from vacation in time to make this race, but, I was resolved to run for 2nd place.  My diet and alcohol intake over the past days would be a factor, and the heat index was well over 100.

The crowd was lighter for this one.  I suspect that the heat scared some folks away.

I got out to a steady start and booked 8:10 for the 1st mile.  Jan, Katherine and I actually ran together for a portion of this, which as fun. I pulled ahead of them by the turnaround, but, not by much.

We made the turn, and I kept a decent pace.  Just before the 2 mile mark, me and Jan passed a lady. I guess she wasn't too happy about it, as she made some crack about passing her and slowing down. I didn't think much of it.  Mile 2: 8:14.  Jan had pulled ahead at this point. As per usual, I slowed to a walk at the water stop.  The lady passed me and shouted "Come on pacer! Let's go pacer!"  I responded sarcastically. I'm fairly proud of myself for not raining down F bombs on her.  Clearly, she was a little too amped up over her 5k.  Mile 3 was a mix of walking, running, and a few more shitty comments from the 5k queen.  I took my time, realizing that I would not catch Jan, but, knowing that 2nd place was secure.  Mile 3: 9:36.  Total: 26:52

Jan is simply faster than me as this series progresses, and, I'm okay with it.  This series has been good for me as I've pushed harder than I did a year ago. That should serve me well going into the fall.

Wildfire Half 2017

7.16.17

2nd time for this one.

I ran this event in 2015 and thought it sucked. Why am I back??

Mellew's races are bad.  This one is no exception.  This race takes pace at at the CH Collins Athletic  Complex in same site that hosts many of the DAR TRI's.  While this course makes some sense as a bike course, it is a terrible run course.  Again, why am I here?

I suspect it was a temperature check race for me.  With Pikes Peak and Chicago coming up, I needed to see where I was in terms of running.

I arrived early, picked up my packet, and waited.  I visited with a few folks prior to the race, and we commented on how the weather was mild...that would change.

I hoped to run 9:30's for the 1st half of then race, see how I felt, and, adjust accordingly.

When the race started, I settled into my planned pace. My knees were a little achy, but, I was hoping that would improve as I loosened up.  By the end of mile 1, I was feeling better, but, was already sweating.

I was pacing as planned, and, even with a quick pee stop at mile 2.5, felt as if I was running my planned race. I was able to jog up hills, and, was passing several folks.  I quickly remembered how shitty of a course this is.  On a highway shoulder in the middle of nowhere with trucks whizzing by, no relief from the sun, lots of hills etc.  (Note to self: stop racing with Mellew).

I felt ok through the turnaround, but, it was startling to get hot.  By mile 7 I was feeling some pain in my left Achilles, and had rubbed a blister on my right foot.  My race fell apart at that point.  Longer stretches of walking ensued, with the need for fluids, ice towels, etc.

I struggled thru the last 6 with lots of walking.  It was incredibly hot, and I was spent.

I mustered up the energy to jog in to the finish, and booked a slow 2:21:32. Even with the terrible time, I was 6th of 18 in my AG, and faster than last time I ran this race.  Clearly, it was a tough day for everybody.

Now, a few days later, I'm convinced that I suffered heat exhaustion during the race.  I took 2 naps later that day, felt like I couldn't get enough fluids, and, felt tired and dehydrated until Tuesday.

Glad this one is done.

2017 Trinity 5000 Summer Series Week 7

7.13.17

Week 7.

Standings:  Jan 3 wins, Derek 3 wins.  Each race means something as Jan and I are battling for 1st in Clydesdale.

It was my hope to manage this race better, with low 8's to start, and maintain / speed up as the race progressed.

That said, I rode 30 hard minutes on the trainer before going to the race.  I was curious to see how my legs would feel.

Mile 1 - 8:04.  I felt good and in control.  As per usual, we were running into a bit of a headwind, and it was hot.  Jan and Katherine were pacing just behind me, and, I knew if I let up, I would be passed.  We made the turn, and my SS buddies were close.  Jan passed shortly after, and looked really strong.  I knew he was speeding up, and would be tough to catch.  I made the decision to save my legs and let him go.  I was afraid I might risk injury if I pushed too hard.  He was simply a stronger runner this time.  Mile 2 - 8:18.  As with the last few weeks, I walked the water stop at mile 2 to take in fluids and let my heart rate decrease a bit.  Katherine and Carl passed me at that point, but, I was still holding 2nd in Clydesdale.  I walked longer than normal, but, kept everyone in my sights, and resumed running.  I passed Katherine and Carl again, and booked a 8:44 mile 3. 6:54 for the .1.  25:52 total. More than a minute behind Jan and nearly a minute slower than last week.  That said, not a bad time compared to my 2016 and 2017 times thus far.

The Mayor's Tri 2017

7.9.17

year 5!

In 2013, this was my 1st Tri ever.  It is an event that will always hold significance to me, and, will be a staple on my race calendar.

I went into this year's event feeling better about swimming, faster (potentially) on the bike due to bike upgrade, and, ok about the run.  However, I'm about 10 pounds over my ideal race weight and my diet has been shit for the past few months.

I knew that FWTRI and TSS would be well represented, and, Lindsi would be competing in her 1st TRI!

I was up a little before 4 with no alarm.  Plenty of time for breakfast and prep.  Out the door by 5ish and no problems checking in, etc.

I'd registered with a 5:42 swim time, which put me at #103.  After asking around a bit, I determined that I needed to move up in the swim line.  I would swim just behind Draper, at #92.  We were spaced well, and I felt good for the 1st several lengths.   I checked the watch at 75M and was at 1:24.  perfect.  All was good until about 175M, when, for whatecer reason, we got jammed behind several people.  The walking began.  The swim has not been that congested for me since year 1.  I walked the last 125M and actually shed my goggles and cap with 25M to go, as, it was clear that the swimming was over.  Total time :  6:47.  (2013: 7:12, 2014: 7:39, 2015: 7:09, 2016: 6:39).  Slow and frustrating.

I ran into T1 and had a fairly good transition at 2:10.

I was eager to see what the new bike would do on this course.  The course had changed slightly due to construction, and, would be a bit longer, but, also had the potential to be really fast.  The route took us out on Burnett to Belknap - Belknap to Forest Park, the typical 2 loops Mayors Course, with a return on Forest Park, Weatherford, Burnett.  A little over 15 miles.  As expected, the 1st couple of miles were fast.  I booked 21 mph and 21.2 mph on those two.  Things slowed as we climbed Forest Park and Park Hill:  15.9mph and 18.1 mph.  Then, stupid fast down University at 23.7 mph.   I was steady through the 2 loops, stayed aero much of the time, and, paced at 18.5 mph per Strava.  That will improve as I increase my saddle time.  Overall, while not one of the "fast guys", I felt good about my bike leg.  (2017: 18.5 mph, 2016: 17.6 mph, 2015: 18.0 mph, 2014: 16.9 mph, 2013: 18.9 mph)

T2: uneventful, but, a decent 1:47.

As I headed out for the run,  I felt decent, and, wanted to keep my splits in the 8's if possible.  There was a great FWTRI presence on The Taylor Street Hill, and I felt strong on the way to the turnaround.  I got the obligatory ass smack from Jello as she passed me, and saw lots of racing buddies.  Atta-boys and high fives were abundant.  I'd slowed a bit, and booked 8:52, 9:29 for the 1st 2 miles.  As I made the turn and checked my Garmin, I realized that the run would be short.  It seemed that the turn around was not far enough out on the trail.  I made my way back to the hill, walked briefly, and then tried to finish strong with encouragement form FWTRI.  As I crested the hill, I tired to push a bit towards the finish.  Strava shows me at 2.6 miles at a 9:18 pace.  not terrible.  (2017: 9:18 pace, 2016: 10:06 pace, 2015: 9:16 pace, 2014: 9:58 pace, 2013: 10:07 pace)

I rounded the corner and booked an overall time of 1:24:36.  Only good for 9th out of 18 in my AG, but, I'm not unhappy with the day.  That said, I can improve in all areas.

2013: 1:31:26
2014: 1:28:50
2015: 1:23:05
2016: 1:30:49
2017: 1:24:36

I was able to watch Lindsi get off the bike and get thru T2.  I ran with her to Taylor Street Hill and let her go from there.  I was able to see her finish.  She killed it!  So proud of her for conquering this new challenge.

FWTRI and TSS was well represented on the podium, with Sheila, Lexy, Remi, Alex, Lindsi, and many others taking home hardware.  Good Stuff!

2017 Trinity 5000 Summer Series Week 6

7.6.17

Week 6.  Standings:  Jan 3, Derek 2.

I'd had a good run on Tuesday, and knew that my legs were feeling better after my lingering injuries and Buffalo Springs.  It was my hope to replay last week's plan with better execution.  Low 8's to start...controlled...maintain pace without blowing up.

Mile 1:  7:54.  A little faster than I expected, but, I felt ok.  I was ahead of all those I needed to beat.  I made the turn and saw Katherine and Jan not far behind.  In addition,  Jason wasn't too far back.  Mile 2 8:05.  I was still at a sub 8 pace overall, and we had a little wind at our backs as we headed home.  I could feel my heart racing a bit, so, I walked the water stop, but, didn't walk for long, as I knew Jan wasn't far behind.  Katherine passed me at that point and gave me the obligatory ass slap.  I picked the pace back up, and kept her in my sights.  Even with the short walk break, I booked a 8:12 mile 3.  Total time:  24:57.  Only 12 second behind Katherine and good for 1st place in Clydesdale.  I had not run this course this fast since late in the 2015 series, and, 4th fastest out of 25 attempts.  I'll take it.

The next few weeks will be fun as Jan and I battle it out for the series title.

Firecracker 5000 2017

7.4.17

year 4 for this one for me.

In 2015, I set a (then) PR in this race at 24:27.  I know this course well and know that fast times are possible.

This one would be a family affair.  Griff and  I would run, and, Lindsi would push Gage in the stroller.

We arrived a mild temps for July.  It would be a good day to run.  That said, my legs were feeling a little tired, and, I didn't feel well rested.  I was curious to see how I'd feel once we got moving.

Much like my last T5000, I hoped to run low 8's and maintain.

I got out to a comfortable start, and was pacing low 8's...I believed I could settle in.  Mile 1: 8:10.  We circled back onto the trail and I passed a few folks as we headed north.  Mile 2: 8:04...perfect. Now, just hang on.

I continued to push through mile 3, and booked 8:12.  7:45 pace for the .1, and a total time of 25:15.  Not where I want to be, but, a big improvement over my last few races.  My time was good for only 7th in my AG.  Some fast folk out there for this one.

Griff came in next, booking a 34:16.  Lindsi and Gage walked this one, but, got it done!

2017 Trinity 5000 Summer Series Week 5

6.29.17

Week 5...just a few days off of BSL70.3.

I'd taken a few days off since Lubbock, but, my legs were beginning to feel good again.

Going into this race,  Jan was up 2 points in the series standings.  While I was not necessarily feeling the need to push, it would be nice to get a point back by beating him in this one.

I had a plan going into the race...run low 8's and try to hang on as long as I could.  I'd made the mistake in several recent races of getting out too fast and not being able to maintain the pace.  control, I told myself as I neared the start line.

Mile 1:  8:02.  Likely a little fast, but, not the mid 7 pace that always led to issues.  Kathrine had settled in behind me, and was keeping me moving.

We passed Jan a little before mile 1.  He seemed to be having a tough night.  We made the turn at 1.55 and headed back.   I was able to hold a good pace.  Mile 2:  8:11

At the 2 mile water stop I motioned to Katherine that I was going to walk the water stop.  I'd run out of gas.  I suspect that my legs were not fully recovered from Lubbock yet.  Over the next mile, I walked a bit, every so often looking back to make sure that I would not be passed by Jan or Jason.  Even with a slow 9:27 mile 3, I was able to hold on for the win and make up a point.

Griffin medaled too...so proud of that boy!

Buffalo Springs 70.3 2017

6.25.17

Just after 2016 Austin 70.3, I immediately began to look for upcoming HIM's, as I felt shorted by not getting to swim in Austin.  Realizing that Galveston would present a scheduling challenge, I registered for BSL70.3 just a week after Austin.

This race has a reputation of being difficult, but, it was close, more than 40 members of FWTRI would be racing, and, it was cheap.

Coming off of TRI FW, I knew I could be better on the bike and run at BSL70.3.  I'd purchased a new bike just a couple of weeks before this race, and only had 36 total miles on it prior to race day.  That said, I was far more comfortable on the new bike than I had been the previous bike.  I was eager to see what it could do in a race setting.

I booked 3 nights at the host hotel, which would be near the expo site.  After a morning meeting in Hood County of Friday, I headed towards Lubbock.  I arrived mid afternoon with no issues.  I checked in, unloaded gear and headed to the Expo.  This expo was much smaller than that in Austin.  I'd heard that this race had a small race feel to it, and, if the expo was any indication, it would.  I picked up my gear, bought a few items, visited with a few friends, and headed back to the hotel.  A group was convening for dinner on Friday, so I tagged along.  Good food and good company to get the weekend started.

Back to the hotel for what would prove to be a tough night of sleep.  But, up and at em on Saturday for short swim, bike, run.

Back to the hotel to clean up and drop gear, and, the off to lunch and expo.  I was able to catch a short nap after the day's activities, and, get cleaned up again before the club dinner on Saturday night.

After a great dinner with the club, it was time to get back to the hotel to prep my race gear.  Unlike other IM events, BSL70.3 allows for Sunday bike check in and transition set up.

I got a solid night's sleep, and was out the door before 5.  By 5:30, I was checked in and racked.  The race was to begin at 6:30, with my swim wave entering the water at 6:42.

After the threat of storms all week, we'd arrived to incredibly mild temps and no rain...it would be a great day to race.

I visited with several friends before heading to the beach, and, when it was our time to enter the lake, I stayed towards the back and strolled in.

Swim:  The swim has been my area of challenge and fear for the past several years.  I've spent a fair amount of time in the water this year, and, felt comfortable as I entered the water.  I found a good easy rhythm early, and, was surprised at how quickly I reached the 1st buoy.  While there was a little traffic, I didn't have too much trouble finding space to swim.  As we continued to make left turns, I realized at one point that I was drifting to the right.  I would have to correct course a couple of times. In looking at Strava, I was as much as 150 yards longer than some others.  Total swim time: 42:20.  I'll get these down in the 30's soon.

T1: Uneventful.  3:19.  Much faster than my 5:50 at TRI FW.  After my cramping at TRI FW, I took a hot shot in transition and had another one ready for T2.

Bike:  The total climbing on this route would be less than Austin or TRI FW...however, there were 8 significant climbs along the way, including 1 as we left T1.  While I was eager to see what my new bike could do in the flats, I was equally interested to see how it would climb.  I'd averaged 16.6 mph at TRI FW.  I wanted BSL70.3 to be faster.  My cycling training in 2017 has sucked...other than TRI FW, I had not completed any other rides of more than 30 miles.  This would be a test.  I hit the hill in my granny gear and cranked up it whilst staying in the saddle.  The Cervelo is much lighter than my Specialized was, and will climb better.  As expected, the bike felt great.  While I wasn't moving as fast as I would have liked, much of that was due to under-training, hills, and headwinds.  About 15 miles into the ride, with a pack of about 30 of us moving incredibly slow, the official hit me with a drafting penalty.  It was truly a joke, as I was several bike lengths behind a small woman, and, was literally not pedaling at the time of the offense.  I was instructed to pull into the next available penalty tent.  For the next 35 miles, the hills continued, and, I noticed that my rear brake was rubbing a bit (while I heard the rubbing sound, I didn't realize what it was until post-race).  I stopped briefly at the hairpin turns so as to avoid a tip over and to refill water bottles.  (3 bottles of tail wind, 1 gel and 1 waffle on the bike - seemed to be plenty).  The hills were tough, and, I didn't have the balls to fly down them as may of the other athletes were doing.  I finally found the penalty tent at mile 50, and, sat out 5 minutes (ridiculous).  I headed back to the park and finished up my ride with 2 killer hills.  16.6 overall average...same as TRI FW.  Tough to compare the two, though, due to climbing and penalty.

T2: again, uneventful.  I did sit briefly to get my shoes changed and took another hot shot.

Run:  after the 2 hot shots, I was hopeful that I wouldn't struggle with the cramping I'd had in my other races.  I felt good as I headed out, and booked a 10:03 mile 1.  I settled in on the idea that  I would try to keep all of my miles in the "10's".  That went out the window when I reached the monster hill at mile 4.  That hill, similar to the Taylor Street Hill, slowed me to a walk.  I knew I'd have a few miles in the 11's.  I felt pretty good though mile 8, and then I began to slow.  I was tired and it was getting hot.  I'd been walking water stops and hills, and the walks were increasing in distance.  I kept up a bit of a run / walk until mile 11, when I experienced a bad calf cramp.  Miles 11- 13 would be a walk, with me working to muster up enough energy to finish strong.  I got big cheers from FWTRI as I crossed.

Overall time:  6:55:52.    14 minutes faster than TRI FW (19 including penalty).  Not nearly where  I want to be, but, an improvement.  I'll push for 6:30ish in Austin in October.

The club hung out and waited for everyone else to come in.  Mike Reilly, the voice of Ironman, joined the club for a photo post race - cool stuff!

The club was well represented with awards at the banquet that night, and, our club won the club award too.  I'm so proud to be associated with this group that continues to motivate, support, and push.
