Take 6.
I've raced in this series most of the 9 weeks that it has taken place. I missed week 1, as it was not yet in my radar, and, weeks 5 and 6 due to travel. I've gotten progressively faster, and the past 2 weeks, I've taken 2nd place in my AG. Not bad for one of the "slow guys".
The plan for today was for me to get the kids from camp / school, and take them to the race, as Griffin wanted to run the 1k. This would also allow for Lindsi to go to yoga at 5:45. As long as she arrived at the race site by 7:25, Griffin could run and I could be at the starting line on time.
I felt somewhat fatigued towards the end of the day. I suspect that the week of workouts coupled with my recent insomnia has led to that.
I picked up the boys early and we headed to chipotle for dinner. With more than 2 hours before the race, I figured I was in good shape to eat a full meal. I got my "regular"...veggie bowl.
We left the house about 6:40. We got to the race site with plenty of time to spare. Griffin was eager to run his race, and lined up at the start line 15 minutes before his start time.
He did great in his race, as always.
I was beginning to get a bit anxious, as 7:25 was nearing, and I had not seen Lindsi yet. She arrived right on time, I handed the boys off, and headed towards the starting line. I had not stretched as much as normal, and, dinner was making me feel a bit heavy. I figured I'd keep the expectations low for tonight. Additionally, today was scheduled to be the hottest day of the year, with a high of 103. However, when we started, I got off to a fast start. In watching my lap pace, I knew that mile 1 would be under 8 minutes. I kept Johnny in my sights, as I knew he would run a race at 25 or under. Sure enough, mile 1 was 7:38. I slowed slightly for mile 2, but was right with Johnny through the turnaround at 1.5 miles. I continued to pace well, and knew I had a chance to come in sub 25 minutes (for only the 2nd time ever). I slowed again slightly for mile 3, but, then picked it up down the stretch, and clocked a 24:49. My second fastest 5k to date, and, only 22 seconds slower than my PR.
As I reviewed the results, it appeared that I would place again. Sure enough, 3rd in my AG. 3 weeks to go in the series. I'll try to make all of them.
week 1: didn't race
week 2: 27:30
week 3: 26:29
week 4: 26:17
week 5: didn't race (traveling)
week 6: didn't race (traveling)
week 7: 26:05
week 8: 25:26
week 9: 24:49
I've improved each week...
