Waco 70.3 2018

10.28.18 (blog entry started March 2019)

After 2 years of complaining about Austin 70.3, finally, change was coming.  Thru the hard work of our friend, Nancy, Austin 70.3 was dead, and Waco 70.3 was born.  Most everyone we knew would be racing in Waco, as it was close to home, and, we wanted to support Nancy.

Lindsi and I would have the opportunity to race together, which I was pumped about, and, several months prior to the race, I'd talked Hider into racing his 1st triathlon ever...at the 70.3 distance.

As referenced in my last post, my training had been poor since IMTX.  I knew I'd need to ramp up to be ready for Waco, so, picked up the training in September and October.  While I was still well above my racing weight, I felt good ability my ability to compete the distance.

We'd seen have rains over the weeks leading to the race, and, it appeared more and more as if the swim would be canceled due to overrun and flooding in the Brazos...

...blog resumed 3.15.2021 (yup 2+  years later)

The quick and dirty on this one...

Lindsi and I would finally get to race together and Hider would race his 1st 70.3 (and triathlon)

time trial start on this one due to cancelled swim:

considering how out of shape I was, not a bad ride at 17 mph:   https://www.strava.com/activities/1933161909

I had a damn picnic in T2 and headed out for the "run".

Cameron Park has BRUTAL hills and the day had turned hot.  I walked most of the course and turned in a 3:23.   https://www.strava.com/activities/1933161954

I headed straight to the medical tent with hopes of an IV as I was severely dehydrated.  Alas, only liquids for me.  I finally mustered up the strength to get back to the finish line to see Lindsi finish.  That was pretty great.

1 and done on this one.  I didn't enjoy it and its f'ing waco.  There are better destinations.

6 month catch up

10.29.18

This blog, much like my training, has suffered over the past 6 months.  Since IMTX, I've struggled with finding motivation to train and blog.

So with that, here's a VERY lazy post to catch up on race reports.

May 2018:

5.26
Knights of Columbus 15k
Just 2 weeks after my blow up at Buffalo Boogie,  I thought I'd attempt this distance...much like Buffalo Boogie, I had trouble managing my HR, and, took several walk breaks.  1:39:35.  10:39 / mile pace...5th of 5 in AG

5.28
FWRC Memorial Day 5k
Griffin and I ran this one together.  He took 1st in his AG!  I felt better about my pace on this one...27:58...9 / mile pace.  8 of 18 in AG

June 2018:

6.2.18
Joe's Run 10k.
This race used to be fun...no more.  The location has moved and the fun is gone.  Th struggle continued, as I booked a 1:01 10k...my 1st 10k over an hour in years.  5 of 8 in my AG

6.7.18 - 8.23.18
Trinity 5000 2018
We made 8 of 12 this year.  The running struggles continued, and, I got progressively slower thru the summer.

Week 1: 27:44
Week 2: 29:06
Week 3: 29:52
Week 5: 29:26
Week 6: 29:43
Week 9: 34:16
Week 11:  40:06
Week 12:  33:42

But, it was fun to run with Griff.

June 24:
Even though I was registered for Buffalo Springs 70.3, I chose to defer to 2019 due to some lingering injuries and overall apathy.

July 2018:

7.4.18
Firecracker 5000 - Griff and I have done this one for years.  It wasn't until after the fact that I realized that most of my running buddies were just down the trail for the Cox 5k.  We'll make the switch next year, too.  27:59...9 min pace...7th of 14 in AG.

7.7.18
Hell's Half Acre - I'd been eyeing this event for years, since it had been El Scorcho.  I received a promo code, so, signed up.  5k and 25k.  Slow and easy 5k followed by a trainwreck of a 25k.  I was nowhere near in shape enough for the distance, and, as a result, walked most of it.

7.15.18
Mayor's Tri.  Flatted on railroad tracks for 1st ever DNF.  Lot's of challenges this year, but, that's another story.  Hated to break the streak of Mayor's Tri's, as it was my 1st Tri ever.

August 2018:

8.6.18
Burger and Beers 5k (Chicago)
We were on a family vacation and saw that this 5k would take place at Soldier Field.  Griff and I ran this one together and had a blast!

8.28.18
HHH 100
skipped...the apathy continues...

September 2018:

9.1
Cox Labor Day Weekend 10k
Griff ran the 5k,  Iran the 10k.  I ran / walked most of this one with Jason Hill.  It was a hot day and a low run.  My streak of 10k's over an hour would continue...1:12:49

Image may contain: Derek Smith, sky, child, outdoor and nature

9.3.18
FWRC labor Day 10k
This tun also used to be fun.  No longer.  Down from 15k signature event of FWRC to a lame 10k at Trinity Park.
Still slow, still elevated HR on runs.  1:12:49

9.22
Run for Aortic Health 10k
I can't even remember how I found out about this one...likely just looking for a training run.  Only 31 people in the 10k.  Small event.  1:07:45.

9.29.18
Rahr 5k
One of my favorite races of the year, and, was my 1st 5k back in 2012 when I started running again.
Still slow...31:52.

October 2018:

10.6
CALF run
This run supports The Cowtown, and is heavily supported by the local schools.  Lindsi, Griffin and Gage ran the 5k,  I headed out for a brutal 10k.  This course wasn't great, it was hot, and, I'm way out of shape.  1:14:16.  My slowest 10k ever.

Image may contain: 4 people, including Lindsi Yarbrough Smith and Derek Smith, people smiling, people standing and outdoor

So...I'm out of shape, 15 lbs overweight and struggling to find training / racing motivation.

And with that, the blog is caught up.
