St. Patricks Day Sprint Tri 2017

3.12.17

2 weeks removed from Cowtown.

After Cowtown, I took a week off and resumed my workouts.

I've never raced at the St. Patricks Day Spring before, and, this planned to skip this year too.  I typically skip due to unpredictable weather in mid-March.  However, peer pressure is a bitch.  Many of my FWTRI friends were racing, so, whilst at the FWTRI awards banquet the week before the race, I registered.

Now, I'm quite familiar with this course, as it is the same course as Monster Keller in October : 300M swim in 50M pool, 12.5 mile bike, 5k run.

Fortunately, the bike course would be back to its "normal" 2 loop course, after 2 years of a 3 loop mess due to construction.

I arrived early to pick up my packet and prep.  The temps had turned cold over night, and we would start the race with the temperature in the chilly mid 40's.

After all was prepped, I headed inside to wait.  I've always struggled during this swim, but, wanted to push a bit, so was ambitious with my estimated swim time.  That moved me up in line bit.  The wait began...

My swim was an uneventful 6:56.  My fastest swim in this pool yet, but, still slower than I would have liked.

We headed out into T1. It was cold AF.

I had a jacket and gloves in T1 for the bike.  Jacket on...gloves, not so much due to wet hands.  It would be a cold bike.  T1: 2:13..slow.

I headed out onto the bike course pedaling hard.  As we made the right turn to head NorthEast, we hit a hard, cold, headwind.  It was tough.  All in all, the course was fast...much faster than the past 2 years.  The results show me 16.6mph on the bike, but Strava has me at 17.6.  clearly, somewhere, the distances are calculated incorrectly.

T2:  a very slow 3:03.  my hands and feet were numb, and I caught a killer cramp in my left calf as  I was attempting to get my run shoes on.  I had to stretch it a bit before heading out.

Run:  I was hoping to push a bit on the run, but, my legs were not having it.  I ran low 9's, but pushed a little at the end.

Overall time:  1:23:35.  My best time overall on this course, but, just an "ok" day.

2017: 1:23:35
2016: 1:25:42
2015: 1:24:46
2014: 1:26:42
2013: 1:31:49
